look at the pictures on the link below, sounds like a wood duck. mallards are larger than wood ducks and more common. I have seen a few in person, and they are very "eye catching".

Most likely a Wood Duck (Woody). They are fairly common though not a s common as the green-headed male Mallard. The link is an image of a male Wood Duck.
