It means they're happy and content. Young kittens need to stimulate their mom's mammary glands in order to have the milk flow. So they knead on her. Once they grow, the behavior is a demonstration of happiness and contentment.

Thats what they do when they are kittens when they are nursing from their mamas.It's a comfort thing. Kinda like a little kids favorite blankie. If they knead you that means they like you and you give them comfort.

SOME cats knad because they were taking away from their mothers too early. Some will stop doing it, yet for some it just means they're happy.
