I have an 8 month old and I am looking to breed him once. He is AKC etc. Just wondering on what is the right age, whether you need to wait a year or not.

From the JRT club site.. They should wait until 18 months, minimum.

I hope you are aware that mating will very likely change his personality and behavior. He will stress each time he smells a neighborhood female in heat, be more likely to start fights with every male he sees, and try harder to escape the yard, or when the door is opened..It is often the beginning of indoor 'marking'..

It is far better for his mental health, and your own sanity, to have him neutered as a 'virgin'..

If you are just wanting him to have a buddy of his own, there are so many wonderful JRTs available here> http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?action=1&pet.Animal=Dog&pet.Breed=jack+russell&pet.Age=&pet.Size=&pet.Sex=&location=93266&preview=1&scope=0&x=8&y=13
Just put in your own zip code to find a pup near you...

He needs to be at least 2 years old and have passed health tests (not just simple vet exams), he also needs to have either been shown & pointed or evalauted by at least 3 unbiased breed knowledgable peopel/judges to see that he meets breed standard. He also needs ot have an impeccible pedigree. Just because he's AKC registered doesn't mean he is of a quality to be bred.

A male dog can usually breed at about 9 to 10 months of age. You can get a test done by the vet to check his sperm count.

if your dog can NOT pass a vet check and get the OK, I suggest leaving this to the professionals who know what they're doing. Eyes, hips, joints, OFA, allergies, temperament, pedigree, 2+ yrs old, brucellosis checked, heart problems, thyroid problems, seizures, etc..

To do this the right way, it is not as simple as having your dog hook up with a female and make puppies. Doing it any other way is wrong - that is why there are so many dogs being euthanized each year in the U.S. alone (over 20 million cats and dogs each year!!).

Never, you don't breed "just one litter", that is irresponsible. If you are not dedicated to the breed and show and work your dog, and prove that he's an excellent specimen of the breed, do you and your dog a favor and fix him.

It's great that he is AKC reg. but unless he is a show dog he really should be neutered.
