Well there's a difference between popular and well known. Jesus is very well known throughout the world, but you'd have to really get an estimate of the percentage of the world that believed in Jesus and took part in those religions to really get an idea...
I'm not really sure. Outside America, I have no idea what celebrities and leaders are popular right now. A lot of people may answer this single mindedly, considering only American pop culture.
I think I would have to finally go with God,who can vary from person to person. Almost everybody has some sort of belief in something or someone thats kinda their "God", be it a force or a person or animal or even just seeing good in others. I think that God is the most popular person in the world right now, whomever or whatever that may be for the individual.
