Before you learn "new and interesting" you should probably learn the basic poses. Google Zeltsman, and Monte Zucker. The Zeltsman site is obviously dated material, but good basic posing hasn't changed.
Monte Zuker is mostly a wedding photographer, but great lighting and posing can be applied to any subject.

Learn your camera, learn light, learn composition. Make sure you know what you are doing before you take peoples time. Check out www.photo.net...plenty of examples in the gallery.
