I live in Amarillo, TX-- the closest larger city is ABQ, NM. I want to cut an outside door where an existing window is now. The door will exit my bedroom and enter onto a flat roof where I want to build a deck. Can any of you give me a guestimate on how much it would cost to cut the door, rip out the window, frame the door, install a door (excluding the price of the door), and repairing any damaged drywall. I will paint the drywall, and hang the door.

Also, is there anything I need to know to make this job less expensive? For example, would a certain sized door, or type of door make it less expensive?

As a contractor in Ohio, I would give an estimate of around $500-$700. This price would include all materials to install the door and finish off the interior, minus the price of the door and painting. Now you have to think about the exterior. Do you have siding, stucco, ect. That would also have to be repaired. If you have never hung a door, I recommend letting a pro do it. Price doors at your local home improvement store. Being that the door is off a bedroom, I recommend an insulated door, it will pay for it self in the long run. Also, get a quote from atleast 3 contractors. Go with the one you feel is the most compitent to do the job, and get referances!

Amarillo is a big city by southwest standards, you have lowes or Home depot and a number of other lumberyards. Buy a pre-hung exterior door, easiest to install. Assume you have wood or non-brick siding, since you did not state it was brick. Cost of door--maybe $200 or so, depends on what style you pick. Framing lumber-another $20 or so. Misc caulk, drywall, nails, etc: $20; exterior framing trim- $25. Paint: $20. Done.

Prehung door is the way to go, and you can use its outside perimeter to gauge your cut.

Make sure to be careful regarding electric--if there is an outlet under the window, you'll need to move it or disconnect, may want an electrician to do that. Also make sure that the roof you want the deck on will hold the weight of the decking material, if not, don't start your wall demolition!

a good door unit will cost u about $ 400.00, try and get a unit that is the same size of the window ur taking out so u dont have to change out the header over the window now...i.hope ur builder installed a load bearing header....if the header needs to be changed ur cost will increase....overall with the material and labor ur looking at about $1,200.00.....

u will need a permit if changing the header and decks....
