Your friends assumed the risk of the Van breaking down when they purchased an as-is vehicle with no warranty. This is why one should purchase a new car, or get the car inspected by a mechanic before they purchase it. I don't think it's fair to assume the dealer knew it would happen though. They may have gotten taken too. The previous owner probably dumped the car on the dealer with a trade knowing they should take ANYTHING they could get for the van because it was having issues. The salesmen making the trade do not have the mechanical experience to know if the car is a lemon. And, many of them don't even send it to a mechanic.... they just turn around and sell it "as-is". So beware of the Sold As-Is sign on the window.

If you pruchased a used car then I doubt you have any recourse against the dealer. Unless you hit something in the road or some gremlin sneeked into you car and poured some contaminate into the transmission you will NOT have a valid insurance claim. Lemon laws vary wildly from state to state but I doubt there is ANY law that covers a used vehicle for thirty days.

Laws are different from state to state.
In general check your sales contract to see if it says anything about warranty or recession rights.
