From your question it sounds like the Canon PowerShot S2 series might be the best digital camera for you. The Canon PowerShot S2 features a 12x zoom.
The latest camera in this series is the Canon PowerShot S3 which retails currently around the $400 price tag (1/2007). The older S2 model might be had from some place a bit less expensive. The newer S3 has one better mega pixel resolution (6.0) then the S2 (5.0). Other than that they look pretty identical in terms of zoom and what have you.

Sony H2, H6, Canon S3IS, Panasonic FZ50, F7, Fuji S6500, 9500, are all excellent choices. Frankly- I've read many reviews and they're all quite good. So- check them out by size and price, and buy whatever one you like the most. There are no wrong choices here.
Personally- I'd go for the Fuji S6500. Better high ISO performance, 28-300mm is better for most people than 38-432mm, manual zoom.
Olympus, who once reigned in the Ultra zoom category and has fallen short, has now announced a new camera, the SP550. It will be available soon and seems like one cool device.

i'm a Canon guy so i might want to continuously say Canon! You shoud seem for a strong type s I woud stay with Canon or Nikon or Olympus. i might want to recommend you seem at some fundamentals first and answer some questions: a million. What are you likely to shoot? a. human beings/human beings activities b. Nature - tremendous Mamals c. Nature - Small mamals d. Nature - Birds e. Nature - insects f. surroundings g. activities activities If the various the images are for (a) and (f), you'll do advantageous with a digicam that has 4 megapixels or extra and an optical zoom f 3x to 5x. For some thing except (a) and (f) bypass for a minimum of 6 megapix. extra is extra effective notwithstanding it hurts the pocket extra too. in case you want the above and (b), you may seem for a digicam that has 10x or 12x optical zoom some cameras cme with photo stabilization (they might call it by technique of alternative call - Nikon calls it VR) in case you want the above and (c) or (d), you want to get a SLR with a zoom lens with a max zoom of a minimum of three hundred to 400mm. in case you want (e), be sure that the Macro function exists contained in the digicam. be sure that the digicam can cope with a minimum of two (i might want to choose 4) GB memory playing cards so that you may shoot many many images. As you've stated you pick that the digicam no longer be cumbersome you would no longer want and SLR yet evaluate the alternative depending n your funds.

If you mean Canon PowerShot S2 IS or Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H2 it's really a toss up. I personally lean towards the Sony only because I own it. You might go by price or you may say the Sony throws in a battery charger. There isn't any other brand to look at except maybe Fugifilm FinePix S5200.

Be somewhat careful. Shooting photos with a high ZOOM usually requires a tripod... and a LOT of light! Hand-held shooting at that magnification will almost ALWAYS yield poor/blurred results and the lighting conditions make alot of shots outside the realm of your camera. The slightest movement of the camera yields a huge movement in the field.
I suggest you reconsider the task, and if you really do want hi-zoom, consider a Digital SLR with a high quality piece of glass with low F-rating.

The one I want to get this year is a Canon that has a 4x zoom. For me, zoom isn't as important as MP (megapixels). MPs increase your change of clarity in picture rather than zoom. The Canon I want is only $198 and has 8 mp.

Panasonic has very strong zoom lenses (the lens isn't interchangeable though). Also Sigma has a good history of lens making.
