Do research on the WAC program. Their initial purpose was to do the mundane jobs as supply,, cooks,, personnel jobs to release the men to the front line. I read stories where there were women pilots that tested the planes before they were shipped back to the front. The original Wac museum was at Ft McClellan AL, where they were initially trained and worked. That base is now shut down and i heard they moved it to Fort Jackson SC. Good Luck to you.

I have a friend who is 87 years old. She was in the Army in WWII. What I found the most interesting in her stories was the fact that the women had to submit to medical exams monthly. She said they would not get paid unless they submitted to "probe and poke". She never saw combat of course. Her job was to do the background stuff so the men could concentrate on the war. I've never asked her why she joined. I will ask her next time I see her.

Right now she is feisty and if anybody gets in her way she'll say "I was in the Army and I know how to make you sing soprano!"

The first woman to recieve the medal of honor was a civil war nurse. While not directly enlisting, women have been parts of army units at war in this country for hundreds of years.
