My daugthter is almost 2 and talks A LOT. she has a boy cousin who is a couple months older and only says 3 words. Is this just a good example of typical boys and girls, or by this age is only having a 3 word vocabulary a sign of a problem?

At 24 months, the average child will have an expressive vocabulary of about 50 words, and is beginning to produce 2-word utterances. If this cousin isn't using 2-word utterances by 30 months, he needs to be seen by a speech pathologist. At 30 months, he will be on the edge of speech/language delay, and it will need addressing..

Children develop different skills at different stages. My daughter was talking in full understandable sentences by her 2nd birthday. Things like "Have a nice day" "I'm a good girl" "My name is Shannon" She began vocalizing almost from day one and when she started "babbling" I would talk to her as if I could understand what she was saying. Of course by the time she was four she was talking my ear off...sigh...But it's best not to compare children, each one is an individual and just because one talks in full sentences early doesn't mean they're going to excell somewhere else later on.

My son will be 3 in April. He has a cousin who will be 3 in June. My son talks more than his cousin. His cousin has two older siblings. Since there is an age gap some just develop slower than others. Ask your doctor. I think in todays society that doctors put kids on medication and label them because the parent doesn't want to be bothered with disciplining their child. They think that because they are hiper is because they have adhd etc. It is all on what the parent feeds their child and what kind of habits they allow them to pick up.

Sounds like it could be a problem- the same thing happened to me and a friend. My son spoke very articulately and hers didn't- by the time she had him checked-out he was diagnosed with autism.
