If he likes wood working- how about getting him some really unusual pieces of wood to make things out of?

Really exotic wood is expensive, but depending on your budget and what kinds of things he makes, you can get hold of a local lumber place, tell them what kinds of projects he does and ask for suggestions on wood.

Woodworking can mean anything from, carving, whittling, box making, cabinet/furniture making to repair work.

Take a look a Zebra Wood, or burl oak or a type of Ash that he won't just find at Home Depot. Look online. It isn't just about the tools- it's about the product he works on too.

Have you looked at wood working books. There is so many. I am sure he does not have them all. Also making a Birthday card from scratch is really a nice gift too. For he will now that the card took some time to make. Maybe make a special breakfast for him too.

Well, you could go to his favorite store, maybe where he buys his tools, and get him a gift card, then he could go pick out something he needs or wants.
Sometimes its so hard to buy for people...
Very thoughtful of you...
