I would go with Canidae. I used to feed my dogs Pedigree but they started to break out and their coats were dry and matted. Once I switched to Canidae their coats improved and they don't break out anymore. The other thing I noticed is that when my dogs go pee or poop, they don't yellow my lawn or stink as bad.
Canidae is also one of the top dog foods for Breeders and Show Dogs.

Be prepared to feed your dog a lot. Great Danes eat 3 to 6 cups of food twice a day.

Your best bet is fresh food. Fresh chicken and turkey and beef. Fresh raw vegetables and fruits. Fresh brown rice and oatmeal. Fresh yogurt, eggs, and cottage cheese.

However, Danes should not be fed above 25% total protein. The reasoning is that higher protein results in more rapid growth, and thus more developmental problems, such as canine hip displaysia (CHD), panosteitis (pano), osteochondrosis dessicans, and wobblers syndrome. Some believe that even 25% is too high. It is better to be feeding 23% or 20% protein. High protein is bad for older dogs. The higher protein puts a greater load on the kidneys, and therefore may cause kidney problems that can be avoided. Also, a diet that is too high in protein causes gas, which in Danes may cause bloat and torsion of the stomach. Fiber content needs to be 4 percent or less.

Great Danes are prone to hip dysplasia (a malformed ball and socket in the hip joint), hypothyroidism (a condition that causes the body to slow down), Von Willebrand's disease (a bleeding disorder), heart disease, tumors and bloat. So healthy nutrition in these dogs is on a must know basis.

There is a good article for your reference listed below.

Good luck with your new dog!

There are actually a few dog foods that immulate the BARF diet. One of them is a line from Innova called EVO. I had my dobie on this and she absolutely loved it. The only reason I took her off of it was because she was allergic to something in it. Mine has very dry skin, so I give her 4 gel caps of 1000mg Fish Oil pills a day and it works like a charm, plus she thinks it's a treat and she just gobbles them up. I don't have to force them down her throat or anything. Another supplement I give her for her coat is Brewer's Yeast with Garlic pills, found at your local pet store. She was having a few problems with the drop flea medication(what you put along their spine). I bought these and she's been on them for about 1.5 yrs now and I have never had a flea. I take her outside ALL the time and with the drop medication they aren't supposed to get wet for a couple days after application. Also if they get wet too often after it has supposedly soaked in, it can wear off. The yeast/garlic pills are a daily thing, she gets 1 tablet for every 10lbs, and loves them. I currently have her on Wellness Simple Solutions Venison Formula, made by Old Mother Hubbard. If you are worried about the raw diet, try the EVO line of dog food first to see how he will do. Many people who feed raw also supplement with dry, and EVO is one of the ones many people supplement with. It's a great alternative, completely human grade ingredients, no grains, but it's a little pricey. I bought the Red Meat variety and it was $18 for a 6.6lb bag. However the dog ate less, and loved it, so for me it was worth it. Hope some of this helps you!

He needs a good quality food with a protein level of no higher then 24%. Do NOT feed supermarket brand foods such as Pedigree, IAMS/Eukanuba, Purina Dog Chow, Science Diet, etc...they are loaded with cheap fillers.
Look for good foods such as Canidae All Life Stages, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul regular Adult formula or Adult Large breed Formula, Wellness, Solid Gold, Premium Edge, Blue Buffalo, California Natural just to name a few.

Congradulations on trying to choose a good food!
Innova dog, Chicken Soup For The Dog Lovers Soul, Timberwolf, Natural Balance, Flint River Ranch, Fromm, Canide All Life Stages, Merrick, and Go Natural are all good choices somthing that is good to do is rotate between three or four different brands/flavors. Stay away from anything with corn, wheat, by-products, BHA, BHT, meat meal, and soy. All of which can be dangorous to your dog in the long run

I and many breders I know, prefer Nutro Natural Choice. It comes in the many stages of a dog's life and is a good quality dog food.

RAW is best, especially for a great dane. If you insist on kibble, Wysong is great for large breeds.
