"Barn door" is also the term for a "door" in a one-piece long-john suit-pajama, which in the old days, a farmer would have worn out to "do his business" in the outhouse. So technically, if your "barn door" is open, your butt would be hanging out too!

I didn't research it, but I'll bet that's the origin.

Because in a barn, if the door was open the horse could come out. So if your zipper is open your horse could come out

Because it's a euphemism, and it's more polite to let a person know this sort of thing discreetly.
The phrase "barn door" is used, becuase when a barn door is left open, an animal might escape... and you don't want the trouser snake escaping this barn. ;)

I always say XYZ.. Barn Door seems much too flattering, that would mean something large might fall out.. and who are we kidding really?

I think making it cute lessens the awkwardness of it all.

Awkward or not, PLEASE help your friends out and tell them when something like this is wrong. It shows true friendship to tell someone to zip their fly or pick their hanging booger.
