The best vacuum by far is a Dyson. They are expensive costing between $400 and $550. There are three different vacuums one is specifically for animals but they all work equally well. The vacuum will last forever and the company gives a nice warranty for the vacuum. It is the best vacuum I have ever owned my carpet is always free of hair and crumbs. I own 5 dogs and have kids so I know how valuable a good vacuum is.
EDIT: The suction on a Dyson is excellent, they are bag less and have a filter system. You can go to a Best Buy store and they will show you how well they work against any other vacuum.
I also must say that initially they are expensive but in the long run they end up being cheaper because you will have to replace other vacuums often when you own dogs.

Forget Dyson. Overpriced and not much suction for the money.
I have a Newfoundland...lots of long hair. I have a Kenmore Progressive. About $280 (vs. $500 for a Dyson). It has a belt-less (direct drive) for easy power. It has a "bag full" indicator. It has cleanliness gage that lets you know when there is no more dirt to pick up. I hate to have to move the vacuum to use the suction hose attachments. The Kenmore has a very long hose attachment that works very well too, with a powered stair brush.
My old Hoover would get the dog hair wrapped around the rotating brush, but the suction on the Kenmore is powerful enough to go past the brush and not bind up.
An excellent vacuum.

OH I have the one for you to buy, I own a dyson animal and I can tell you was worth every penney I paid for it. They suck up so much hair its amazing an emptying is easy no mess no bags, I just push a release button an bottom drops down an it all goes straight to trash. I have a great nephew that has exema so I have to watch the hair in the house do to his skin problems, an using a dyson makes it much easier for his skin. You will also be amazed at the amount of dirt it picks up also.

You should look into getting a Dyson they are the best for that. They are kinda of pricy but they are worth it. You'll end up spending the same amount along the way with different ones trust me Dyson..(they sell them at Target)

Get the Dyson Animal. It is made specifically for pet hair. Look on Ebay for deals as well as overstock.com. I have one and will never buy another brand again!! It gets everything out of your carpet and you can just feel your house is clean!

having dogs for years i can say most vacuums are horrible with animal fur. even our kirby can get bogged down by it and that's a $300 machine. i'd personally bite the bullet and buy a dyson. that way you never have to complain about your vacuum again.
