Don't get me wrong. I've only read one Harlequin romance in my life, and it was only because it was about a hot Australian guy named Harry. For the most part, I find the plots uninteresting and the female characters not complex enough. If anything, it seems that the main things going for them is their looks and not their intelligence or strength of character. That being said, though, does anyone here think that these books have any bearing in reality?

Like most men, Harlequin novels treat women like brainless sexual objects. They're great if you want a quick w-ank, but after that, there's no substance — also like men.

like you i haven't really read a lot of those books. The ones I have read don't seem to be based on reality. I mean one where a women meets a doctor at one of those men auctions where they auction off men and her lady friends buy the guy for here and they end up falling in love. I mean it could happen but how many times do you see that in real life. Or the other I read was about a spy/assassin who is sent to spy on woman who his boss suspects is a spy. Well, needless to say he rapes her to get the information out of her and he realizes she's not a spy just an innocent bystander. So he ends up feeling guilty and they fall in love and in the end he saves her life. Now really..I don't know many assassins who all of a sudden turn good and fall in love. I really don't think these stories are based on reality but actually on the whole concept of love happening in the oddest or weirdest instances.
