Yes, have you ever heard of the saying - "fight" or "flight"?
The body's response to certain situations produces adrenline, which can be very powerful. The adrenline rush can make you do amazing things, like lakemoon said (pull cars off babies, run real fast, etc)

There is even some thought that genetic changes can alter a person's abilities, so that they might under extreme stress be able to fly or stop time, etc. But this is a theory.....

I believe we can. Our body has certain limits put in place for a reason...we only use a small portion of our brain anyhow...but when you add adrenaline (which comes in most "serious" situations) your body is capable of so many more things than what we THINK we're normally capable of doing. I agree with one of the other answers..most of our limits are self-imposed....but I do believe that they are self-imposed for a reason.

I know what he's saying, and yes, we can, to a degree. Mothers have lifted cars off of their children after wrecks, a little girl chewed her rope off her hands when she was kidnapped and being held in a dopehouse, escaping and watching herself on the evening news the very same day, and people who have never swam before have dove into a river to save their drowning friend. It all depends on the situation and the strength of the person.

If you can go past it, it's not really a limit is it?

Our so-called limits are often self-imposed at a much lower level than what they really can be if absolutely necessary.

Yes, I think so.

I think that normally our body limits what we can do, so we don't injure ourselves, but if the situation is dire enough, then yeah, you can do things you would not normally be able to.

Yes that is what our adrenaline is for. We are designed for bursts of speed to get out of the way of wild animals (or in modern society lift cars) for survival mode.
