about a week or so ago i noticed a bump near the base of his tail. over the next few days it got larger until it was a little smaller than half of my fist. i put hot compresses on it but nothing made it smaller. then it seemed to pop and started oozing red puss. i put peroxide on it and thought everything would be ok. but then yesterday i noticed it was back, the same size as before. and now it is oozing again.

it seems he sleeps a lot more than he used to and is acting aggressive. he growls at me when i touch him or for no reason at all. i haven't noticed him eating a lot, either.

yesterday when i noticed the bump again i touched it to see if it was warm and he really didn't like it, so I assume the area is sensitive.

i am planning on taking him to the vet very soon but i would like to know what is wrong with him. i love him very much and it's heartbreaking for me to see him so miserable.

thank you for any help you can give me.

Sounds like a hematoma, almost like a blood blister, take him to the vet, they will drain, clean, and sew him back up. If they lick , or scratch at it, it will get worse. My dog had it twice. Surgery once, the second time I caught it , and made her wear a elizabethen collar, so she couldnt scratch it. It went away on its own.

It's probably an abcess. If your cat goes outside it is likely that he encounters other cats and has maybe even gotten into a tangle with one of them. Cats have very dirty mouths (lots of bacteria) and very elasticy skin. So, when they get a bite from another cat, the bacteria gets trapped right in there and then forms an abcess. The tail area is a common place where you might find one. A lot of times they will clear up right away, but not always. Time to see your vet to verify this and get some antiobiotics for the cat.

Um- if this bump was swelling so much- and that is HUGE, especially on a relatively small animal like a cat!- Then your cat should be at the vet's, not at home! And some time ago at that!

That swelling could be a very nasty cyst, perhaps a severely infected cut- or even a tumor. I hope it's a cyst: Those are treatable.

Good luck.

Stop allowing your cat to go outside. They are more likely to catch diseases, be trapped and turned in to a rescue or run over by a car. Since your cat has been roaming around outside, there is no telling what he could have gotten into. Be a responsible pet owner and take him to the vet.

Rush that cat to a vet Stat! What you described needs medical attention ASAP! Any delay can impact on the life of you cat. You might want to pick up the "Cat Repair Book" by Ruth B. James. DVM. It is filled with medical info. and techniques that you can use to treat your pet at home, and tells you when you need veterinary attention for your cat. It has saved me a lot in vet bills and also alerted me to emergency situations that I might have overlooked without it. Good luck!

you've known about it for a week, it has oozed pus and it's gotten to the size of half of your fist and you're just now thinking of taking it to the vet? i'm sorry, but WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!! take him to the vet right now!! if you love him like you say you do you should have done so when you first noticed it..obviously he's in pain if he's acting aggressive when you touch it..get him checked out ASAP!!!!!

It sounds like it might be an abscess, maybe in a gland or from a wound. It will be sore, more than likely, so he will probably not be happy when you touch it. Get him in to the vet...they will fix up the spot so it drains and doesn't come back, and will probably give you antibotics to prevent further infection.

try using some neosporin...dont use the one with pain relief...you can purchase the walmart brand for under $2...just keep the neosporin on it he is going to lick some off so you have to keep re-applying...my cat got outside once and got into a fight with a tomcat and the tomcat bit him so badly that he actually had a hole in his rear leg i couldnt afford to take him to the vet but i kept the hole full of neosporin constantly and within a week it had closed up...good luck i have been in your position before

I have a cat too, so I know how you feel. I am not sure, but it may be a sting or something like that. Your best bet is to see the vet though.

I have your cat feels better!
