If it has been documented, please give me some names or tournament information. If there are no records of it happening at a tournament, do you know if anyone has been paralyzed? I was thinking there was a story of a fatality from one of the Olympics, but maybe I'm wrong.

I don't know of any, but with all the different associations having so many tournaments, it probably has.

i have done tae kwon do for 4 years and i love sparring, of course there is some chance of getting hurt just like in baseball, soccer, and foot ball. the biggest injury iver ever suffered was a sprained ankle and it only took about a mouth to recuperate. I will let you know this though you will have lots of bruises. Tae Kwon Do sparring is safer than other Martial art sparring like MMA and Hap Ki Do, they allow excessive force. Tae Kwon Do does not allow Punching to the face, or strikes below the Belt. Also there is no Holding, Pushing, Kicks to the back, Sweeping, Throwing, or breaking bones. In Hap Ki Do almost all of these are allowed except Breaking bones, and punching to the face. So in general Tae Kwon Do Sparring is safer than most Martial Art Sparring.

I was talking to a lady who said that her daughter had been training in TKD for many years. According to her they were at a tournament when a fighter was kicked in the head. He collapsed and later ended up dying. She took her daughter out of the sport. I have no reason to believe she was lying.

not that I'm aware of, but there is an interesting video of a tkd guy getting slammed on his head when he tried to do mma. At the very least he was hospitalized.

I'll look for the link and post it if I can find it.

EDIT: didnt Take long.

taekwondo is one of the safest sports you can compete in. Sure you will have hyper extensions and the occasional lucky knock out. but no one ever gets seriously hurt... there are too many pads and too little power in most techniques. They go for points, not pain. Faster = less power.

while i never seen or heard once, there is a chance....it depends on what is the sparing condition like. the highest one would be black belt VS black belt.

there are instances of blood...but mostly in the mouth...when someone execute a high section turning, backhook, or any attack that hits near the mouth...teeth may drop off and bleeding may occur.
