No, your passport needs to have the bar code on it which most passports have on (mine does and it was issued nine years ago). The new passport with the chip in is biometric and therefore you don't have to fill in all the forms when you get to New York but that is the only advantage. If you want to be totally sure you are OK check with the passport agency as they will be able to advise you 100%

Not necessarily. If your passport was issued within the last 10 years it will be machine readable (a bar code on the page with your picture on. If you have one of these then you won't need a visa.
However, if you have the old style passport without the bar code you will have to apply for a visitor visa. The problem is you are cutting it fine to get a visitor visa if you have the old style passport.
Give your local [passport office ASAP, or call 0871 918 9075 for free advice but do it straight away
Have a quick look at the British Airways (the page is not on strike unlike the cabin crew!!)

If your passport was issued before 26 October 2006, it must be either biometric or machine readable. If issued on or ater 26 October 2006, the passport must be biometric.

if you look in brochure or on t's and c's it will prob say, it is your responsibilty to check correct passport and visa requirements. Yes you need an electronic one, and it must have at least 6 months before expiry from date of your holiday, and if you have any type of crim rec you'll need a visa too! Good luck!

You need a machine readable passport if you want to travel under the Visa Waiver program. Otherwise you will have to apply for a visa. machine readable is when you have chevrons along the bottom of your photo page. I would speak to the american embassy to enquire and do it quick!!!
