The same thing happened to me, and I ended up having a root canal because after the dentist starting drilling he said it was way too close to the nerve. I would say the pain is about a 4 or 5. The dentist will drill out all the inside of your tooth to make it hollow and they kill the nerve. What causes the pain, is that when they're drilling your tooth, they'll numb the gum, but some of the nerves don't go numb,so as they're drilling they'll hit the nerve and it'll hurt like crazy, but then they'll just inject it w/ novocaine and continue. It'll happen a few times. That's the most painful part. After that they'll just put the crown on, and probably give you some ibuprofen. It shouldn't really hurt after the drilling part though.

Root canals if done right only cause somewhere around a 2 or 3. They really aren't that bad. Just in case though prepare yourself for it not being done right and i'd say 6 or 7. Also I am not sure but I know they have this new laser technology that completely takes the drilling and all of that out of it but I don't know what procedures they use it on.

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the worst, I would rate it at about a 3. It's really not that bad---at least my experience wasn't. When I had it done, I was literally shaking before hand since I have a low pain threshold. I was so relieved when I discovered that it wasn't nearly as bad as all the horror stories had led me to believe. I didn't find it any worse than having a cavity filled---other than I had to have my mouth open for a longer period of time.

If you go to a specialist who does only root canals (endodontist) the pain is maybe a 1 during the procedure. If you go to a regular dentist it may be much worse!

To be honest, its not the pain that you experience during the procedure but the aftermath. Depending on the depth of the cavity (i.e. does the entire root have to be removed), is the level of pain that will be experienced. Mostly its really cold and extremely hot drinks that will cause an immediate shot of pain, that subsides quickly. My experience to rate your question: 3-4

I had no pain when I had a root canal. 50 minutes in the chair, no pain, and I was outta there. Also, I had no pain after the procedure.

2-4, depending on individual sensitivity. I'd rate mine at about a 2. The only thing that sucked was keeping my mouth open, my muscles were sore because of that.

It's hurts your pocketbook worse than it hurts your mouth. 4 probably on a 10 scale.
Maybe we can get Hillary to take more money away from other people and get those paid for for us, too!
