Click Ctrl + Alt + Del and open the Task Manager. From here you can close unwanted applications.

Your BEST bet is to install Winpatrol from the below link. Its free. They have a tab called 'startup' and 'services' where you can look at individual programs that start on its own. Research each one at http://www.processlibrary.com to see if you really need it.
