Because religion teaches and condones violence. Sanctimonious violence, yes, but violence.

If a man (no gender implies) lives in the absence of civilization, who will judge whether he is a vicious, fearful, and violent creature?

If you have more than two, especially when there are different sexes, then it is very likely an unstable situation happens. Civilization is another word that describes evolution of human behavior. Religion is part of civilization too. With good and bad inputs, I will say.

You use "religion" as if it referred to only one thing, a common error. "Religion" is many things to many people, and one persons "revealed truth" is another person's "apostasy". Like it or not, many monotheist religious groups do advocate violence, there is, after all, no difference between Muslims bombing a synagogue and Christians bombing an abortion clinic. Both are acts of terrorism. You are also mistaken in you belief that civilization inherently moderates fear and viciousness. A casual look at history will reveal any number of "Civilizations" that actively encouraged and fed off of those qualities. Consider the witch hunts of the Christians, the last witchcraft trial in the U.S. was in the mid 1950s. The last attempt to bring such charges was in the '70s. In the '90s Christians broke into the home of a Pagan family, kidnapped their children and attempted to get a court order requiring them to convert to Christianity to get the kids back. Nazi Germany was a "Civilized" country, the Shia Islamic is one of the olded civiliziations on Earth. Tiaman Square was the act of a "Civilized" country. Men are vicious, fearfull creatures because their society raises them to be that way, when societies change, so will the people in them.

You can't blame religion in general, but you can blame stupid religious people who take themselves too seriously and want to force everyone into believing in something or telling them that they'll go to hell if they don't. Even in the PRESENCE of civilization, people are still pretty vicious. Not fearful, but kind of pathetic!

I agree that man is vicious and fearful, but that goes for 'civilized' man as well. Religious or not, man is an animal.
