Well, probably the only people that would fit into this category of putting down believers in a higher being, aka Christians etc. would be atheist, so I'll focus on them. But first of all Christians and atheist alike put people down, and neither "religion" states that part of its operation is to put people down, so its more personal issues and thus a lack of spirituality that leads to the put down in any situation. Having said that, back to Atheists:
The reason they put it down is at least two fold.
1. Really the church drew first blood in this, when they state that non-believers will go to hell, and thus deserve to be tortured for all eternity. Historically Christianity etc. attacks non-believers through their Oxymoronic "Holy Wars", crusades, witch burnings, book burnings, etc. So Atheists really started out on the defensive in this, defending their right to think for themselves, and so "put down" what they see as a harmful organization that is the enemy to free thought.
2. Atheists find Theism to be illogical to the point of RIDICULOUS , and I can't stress that enough. More ridiculous than Santa clause, and completely unnecessary. An atheists beliefs have the advantage of being based completely and utterly on logic, and hold that logic is more important than being right. Theists tend to want to be right (about their current beliefs) more than they want to find the logical truth, so they hold on to them even in the face of opposing logic. Because of this Atheists often see somebody who believes in a higher being to be less intelligent, weak minded, or "stupid". If they personal issues against "stupid" people then they may insult them.
In the Higher beings defense though, just because beliefs are based on logic doesn't mean they are always right, and it does mean they can change on a dime when better logic comes along. C.S Lewis was a devout Atheists and very intelligent man who went Theist, and wrote a book on it called "Mere Christianity". Probably the best logical theist attempt I've seen. And though Atheist have more logic they often lack spirituality, while the religious tend to start off with more spirituality but lack in logic. I personally don't find either to be fully developed though :).

Sometimes people have a negative experience associated with people claiming to be religious, believing in a higher being or professing to be Christian.
Sometimes it is the inevitable response of the unconverted, carnal mind.
There are a variety of reasons but one of the most common has to do with the misrepresentation of the character of God and the principles of righteousness.
If the character of the individual who professes religion or belief in Christ is not developing for the better, it puts another argument in the mouths of opponents.
A real Christian is most effective through the demonstration of a Christlike character.

The land of the loose and the abode of the loose. we've not got amassing regulations against athiests or political events of any type. we don't seem to have any regulations that are racists of any type like neonazis and so on. And whilst did Christians without notice grow to be an enemy of the state? I examine Christian persecution in different international locations as a new child growing to be up interior the Sixties and became made conscious of their plight. yet I on no account concept i could see it ensue right here interior of america. If u.s. falls with this form of freedom, then the place do freedom loving human beings pass? We as Christians ought to combat back. religious freedom and not state run faith because it became performed in Europe became the very reason u.s. became based.

The Bible's take:
Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom. So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense.
But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say,
“He traps the wise
in the snare of their own cleverness.”

Why do Christians and other religious groups put down atheists for NOT believing? Get back to me and we can compare answers! I'm guessing it will be something like...Because they don't agree with each others' views and each thinks his way is the right way!

Because we (or is it just "I"?) view them as ignorant, arrogant, hypocritical and intolerant (that's about the worst combination of traits ever) sheep who are intent on forcing their One True Way on people and exercising their beliefs to curb choice, intellect, science and alternate beliefs.

Consider it a negative reinforcer.
You are engaged in a harmful behavior. Pain or discomfort will be applied until you cease your harmful behavior. The cesation will be followed by a positive reinforcer.
The harmful behavior: Believing in stupid $#!+ with not a scrap of evidence to back it up.
