Skin is made up of several layers of cells that are rapidly dividing. Thus the skin tanned rapidly gets changed by another skin which is the original color unless u get them tanned too by exposing to UV

Suntan is nothing more than the production of melamine (by melanocites, the cells) in your skin, it's caused by exposure to UV light, from sun or artificial means... once you stop exposing your skin to them, your skin lowers that shield. Yes it's a shield, it produces melamine to protect you from the UV light.

because our skin has many layers and only the top few actually tan so as your body sheds those layers the tan gets lighter.
