See a psychiatrist. They are experts in mental health disorders and know the most about treatment for them.
Family doctors don't know **** about mental health treatments. They have numerous times prescribed antibiotics that are harmful to my other Bipolar meds.

Your best bet is to see a psychologist. You might need a referral from your GP depending on your insurance situation, and whether you have any way of identifying a qualified psychologist on your own.
A psychiatrist does have the expertise to treat mental illnesses like anxiety and depression, but will typically prescribe medication whether that's the best option or not. They're generally interested in finding a pharmaceutical quick-fix, and are less likely to spend a lot of time figuring out what's really going on. Their job is basically to handle the physiological side of mental illness (i.e. medication) that a psychologist isn't qualified to deal with since they didn't go to medical school. Of course, that's a generalization, and there are some psychiatrists that do provide a thorough diagnosis and even counseling, but don't count on finding one.
A psychologist can diagnose the disorder, and although they aren't qualified to prescribe a particular medication, can usually determine whether you'd benefit from medication in general (antidepressants, etc.). A psychologist can refer you to a psychiatrist for medication, or for many conditions you may even be able to get an appropriate prescription from your GP. Once you have the psychologist's diagnosis, it's just a matter of determining which antidepressant, or anti-anxiety medication is appropriate from a medical perspective, and monitoring the medical aspects of the medication. Most medical doctors like it better of the disorder is diagnosed by a psychologist so they don't have to deal with that aspect of things.

If you are wondering if it is a difference between depression and anxiety, you should probably see a psychologist. Psychologists are trained in measure that can tease apart the difference. If you think that it may be an easier diagnosis, then any mental health professional would be ok. A counselor, social worker or psychiatrist (and probably general doctor as well) can make a psychiatric diagnosis. Again, the Psychologist just has the ability to use the most tests to make sure it is the appropriate disgnosis.

psychiatrist is the best choice. They can prescribe medication for you and then when your problem is under better control, they will send you to therapist. A therapist can not prescribe antidepressant or anti anxiety medications. A primary care physician is also a good choice, esp. if your insurance dose not cover you to go directly to psychiatrist and you need a referral. If your anxiety or depression is to the point that you have suicidal idea, don't wait call your primary care, go to ER, or call the hot line. good luck.

you need to have a psychological evaluation so you can be diagnosed properly. An MD does not have the pysch training in MY OPINION to properly handle your mental health. First and formost, do you have insurance because if you dont it may take a while to get an appointment. If you have an insurance card call member services and ask for behavioral health referral phone number. Call it and tell them what your symptoms are and how you would like some help, and were told to schedule a psychological evaluation. Good luck!

You could go to a psychiatrist or you could co see a Licensed therapist. I would choose the therapist as they will generally spend more time with you.

You will probably need to go to your regular doctor for a referral to a psychiatrist. That would be your best bet.
