I am head of a food drive for my company. I am looking for suggestions and ideas of good ways to get cans and other food items donated. Does anyone have any good games or contests? Any suggestions would be helpful.

I organize these kinds of things for the school I work at a lot. The best response I get is when I call local stores and business owners and get items or services donated for prizes. The group/department/individual who donates the most number of cans, items, etc., gets a prize. I've been able to get oil changes, Clinique Cosmetic Kits, luggage, dinners, all kinds of things donated. It sort of defeats the purpose of just giving for the act of giving, but it is also a real staff morale booster.

Maybe you could make a deal with a local restaurant or drive-in. I have worked part-time at a Sonic Drive-in where they had a Monday night special. Costumers from a local office building got 15% discount on Monday night and Sonic donated 25% in food to a local shelter. Of course, Sonic ordered the food from the restaurant suppliers at wholesale prices. Therefore, the shelter got a lot more food than they would have gotten from people purchasing food from a retail grocery store.

My job had a food drive and they got plenty of donations by having a drawing for everyone that donated food items. You could have something like, for every 5 items you donate your name will be submitted in a raffle. So if someone donated 15 items they would have 3 chances. You can either have raffle items donated by area businesses, or purchase gift cards for local restaurants or grocery stores.

I would suggest first contacting your local foodbank. You can go through America Second Harvest website to locate it.

Their Food Solicitation Manager or Food Drive Coordinator can give you lots of ideas, and also supply collection bins for the food.

Try doing an fundraising basksetball game somewhere to collect cans or donations. Hope this helps!

Make a potty-mouth jar. Every time a co-worker says a bad word, they have to bring in a food item. If we did that at my job we could feed the world!

Talk to local businesses and get some prizes donated, then either raffle them off to people who bring in (X) LBs of food or hand them out to 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, etc. Many local shopkeepers will probably donate gift certificates, small knick-knacks, etc. if you explain to them what you're doing. :-)
