It sounds like something from John Adams to his wife Abigail. Unfortunately, I can't find the citation.

You probably won't find the last name of John but the quote comes from WWII when a soldier got a letter from his wife or girlfriend telling him she had found someone else back home while he was at war his name just happened to be John and it stuck even to this day.Our boys in Iraq and other countries are getting them as I type this. They are not addressed
'Dear John"it's just a letter saying she is breaking up with whomever she sent the letter to.

"I don't know
if I did know I forgot
if I didn't forget
then I didn't know in the first place."
