I believe a letter would be the most professional method of requesting donations from your local businesses. You should explain what exactly you are looking for to be donated and what it will be used for. Give them an address, phone number to reach you, a deadline to donate by, a guarantee that the said company's name will be spoken about in highest regards at the event, and a thank you even if they do not donate. Takes less time and offers more straight to the point information than going to every business personally would.

Go to local businesses and ask. Then start moving up the chain. Also you should develope some form of a logo or something. So after a business donates they can put that up in their windows. Some businesses donate to charities for marketing purposes.
If you have a website I can link your organization from my Support Group website if you'd like. Just message me.

Buying billboards is expensive whether its junior boards or digital boards and you should consider location. Billboards are best for event promotion and basic product promotion. It really is difficult to brand, promote, market all at once in a billboard with a reasonable budget. Boards in most small and medium markets get up to $5,000/mth depending on location and can cost as little as $300/mth. Anyone can ask for donations. Not sure why people would donate to you, but if you had a compelling reason - why not? For example, if your company was going to match all donations for a charity or building a public park etc.

Go to all your local business in town and companies in town. Just be up front and say you are wondering if they would be interested in donating something for whatever benefit you are having etc. Explain the details of it and most places will donate something.
