Basically I want to get some songs off a CD and permanently on my hardrive so I can work on some videos with Final Cut Express without having the CD inside in computer. Is the CD ripping the only way? If so, what is the best and easiest prgram (that is free) to use?

Your iMac has iLife on it and in that is iTunes. Put a CD in the drive, it'll appear on your desktop and in the iTunes (already have the app running or it should automatically come up when you put in a music CD).

Hit the "+" button in iTunes or pull down to "create a new playlist." If you're on-line, gracenotes will pick up the song titles and add that for you. If not, and you want them, you can do an "apple" (command) "i" to insert "information" about each track manually.

You can name the playlist for the "album" you have in your drive or you can call it "slow groove" or whatever you want, particularly if it will contain a mix from different CDs.

Make sure the CD in your drive was imported in your music library...once it's there, you can play any of them (being in the library means it's on your hard drive).

You can then take whatever music is in your library and drag/ drop it into your custom playlist. That way, you can burn your own CD mix to take with you or just leave the playlist in iTunes and you can select it to play whenever you want -- while you're using other applications.

You don't have to do the playlist but I'm manic for making them because then it's easy to move over to my iPod or burn a CD of a mix for a friend.
Enjoy and good luck on your project!

Not only will iTunes do this for you, but it lets you choose the format and the bit rate to use. Go to iTunes preferences (comand-, in iTunes) and click on the Advanced button, then the Importing tab. Select the format by changing 'Import Using:' and the bit rate using "Setting:" and the Details section will sumarize the types of files you'll be ripping. You can even have it check the internet for the names of all the songs on your CD.

You should have a program similar to Windows Media Player... you just rip the CD on to the hard drive and that's it. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

You already have iTunes. iTunes will do this for you.
