The similarities are uncanny and I was hoping someone had some books to recommend. There are numerous websites concerning possible sources the Jesus story was modeled after but I would like to read some actual books.

The responses concerning reading the bible and Josephus for "facts" does not answer my question since it is known as FACT that the story of Jesus is a STORY. The bible is a book of fiction that further perpetuates the myth of Jesus. Paul copied Josephus who copied etc....
I merely wanted some recommendations on good books with real proof and facts. I also read the Freke/Gandy book already, EXCELLENT book.

I think the Jesus story borrowed or assimilated from several pagan pre-Christian traditions as well as co-existing mythologies.

Some books on this:

"Mystery Religions of the Ancient World" by J. Goodwin

"The Jesus Mysteries" by Timothy Freke & Peter Gandy

"The World's Sixteen Crucified Saviors" by Kersey Graves

"The Christ conspiracy: the greatest story ever sold" by Acharya S

Other books that I read and thought were excellent and have good scholarship. These two examine the historical intergrity of the Biblical texts: "The Incredible Shrinking son of Man: by Robert Price or "Misquoting Jesus: The story behind who changed the Bible and Why" by Bart Ehrman.

I wouldn't say that it was "modelled" after either. It does follow the same template as all mystery religions from the time, which does tie it to the story of Mithra. As far as the Caesar connection, that's a rather spurious claim.

If anything, the story of Jesus is a retelling of the story of Moses (an obvious sun god), at least in terms of events. This is found mostly in Matthew and Luke.

Someone above mentioned several books, including The Incredible Shrinking Son of Man by Robert Price. His book Deconstructing Jesus is also fascinating. And, you can also tune in to the Bible Geek show, Sundays at 4pm EST, at freethoughtmedia.com.

~~~krazy,,,, Delete Ceasar an add "Saoshyant" from Zoroastrianism and "Horus" from The Egyptian,,,, but Jesus is also a model of other amalgamations, and therefore quite Multifaceted. Please save yourself countless hours of unecessary research and dead-end reading by starting with the premier authority on Comparitive Mythology,,, the late Prof. Joseph Campbell. Begin with "The Hero With a Thousand Faces" and you will find many World Saviours and Regional Saviours, Sons of God, Sacrificial Martyrdom, Virgin Births, etc, etc,,,, you will also find the following very helpful,,,"Myths to Live By",,,"Occidental Mythology" ,,,"Oriental Mythology",,, "Comparitive Mythology". All are excellent and will serve you in De-Mystifying ALL Religion by illustrating The MEANING behind The Symbolism.~~ How refreshing to see someone who still reads books. Good Luck. ,,,(FYI,,,Within the christian text The Emperor Nero(as The Individual) is considered to be represented as The Antichrist or "beast",,,The Oppresive Roman Empire(as The Establishment) was also referred to in Metaphor,,, This, in the Christian Motif acts as The Great Villain vs. The Saviour.)
because that's the tale of Mithras, Horus, Osisris, Dionysus ans yet another dozen mangods and crucified international saviors. The Roman Empire become in probability of being chop up by technique of religious upheaval. So each and every of the mangods were blended into a million - jesus, so as that the human beings might want to rally round a million mangod, and spread this new god each and every the position so the person-friendly human beings instead of the military conquered human beings and territory for Rome.
Well, I don't know which Jesus you mean. But I know of a wonderful man who is also God named Jesus and there is a very good story about Him in the Bible. Start reading the book of John, it's excellent.
Jesus is the Word.
Josephus was a historian contemporary of Jesus and he mentions Him. That is if you are looking for extra-biblical proof of Jesus.
