A contactor is not always used with motors like some of these people said. They can be used in any electircal circuit. The idea of a contactor is that there is a coil (coil voltage can vary depending on size and applicaiton) and when you engage the coil it creates a magnetic field witch will cause the contacts (tipicly just some metal squares of circles attached to a piece of plastic that is being held up by a spring) to be pulled down making a connection to other metal squares. Each set of squares is connected to one side of the contactor. When the meet your the circuit is now closed so that power can run through it.

There are regular contactors and then there are definite purpose contactors. The regular ones are typicaly expensive, but last longer and have replacible parts, where a definite purpose contactor is smaller and once broken gets thrown away.

They are sized based on the intended use. There is an inductive rating and a resistive raiting. There is also coil voltage. if you get one that is too small, then your contacts will char over or weld together. If you get one too big the power being supplied to it will not be enough to engage the contacts and it will not pull down.

hope that helps.

In the electrical business. A contactor is a special relay. It has overload protection. It has sufficient ruggedness built into it to take a constand start and stop pounding of an electrical motor of some sort. On the overload protection side, there is a set of so called changeable "heaters" that monitor the load. When an overload occurs say for a fixed time, the 'heaters' drop out the relay Called heaters because they expand due to overload/heat and drop the motor out of the circuit, cutting out the relay.

So one basically buys a Given contactor for a given motor size. Then one buys those "heaters" and installs those to monitor the overload possibilities. That way the contactor is "tuned" to the motor and its loading situtiation.
