I have an electric stapler on my desk at work. Today, it has started making a purring/growling noise, and suddenly stapling 4 or 5 times in a row. There is nothing in it triggering it! What the heck is going on? My cell phone is next to it and I know sometimes cell phones make computer screens fuzzy temporarily or speakers buzz. Does anyone know if a cell phone could make a stapler staple on its own???

Well, I would recommend you unplug the stapler until you figure out the problem, it could overheat and possibly become a fire hazard.

I really doubt your cell phone is the culprit, but try to move the phone away from it and see if it stops. If you can prove the phone is causing the problem I would get rid of the stapler (that just should NOT happen).

If this is the type of stapler you have to push a button on it to make it work, then I would again recommend you get rid of it. It would probably require taking the thing apart to fix it.

Now if it is the type that you just put paper in and it staples automaticaly, you might get lucky with a cleaning. It probably uses a sensor that detects light and knows when the light path is broken that it needs to staple. If you got some dust/dirt on the sensor then it could be thinking that there is a piece of paper in there when there really isn't. So if you wipe that down with some windex it might be allright.

But if you can't come up with an easy fix, either mine or someone else's answer, I would recommend you get rid of the thing. Keeping malfunctioning electronics around like that is just asking for trouble.

Good Luck!!

Obviously the stapler is mad at you. It may be jealous because it sees you talking to the cell phone all the time and you never talk to it. (Don't bother trying to explain to the stapler that you are talking to someone else THROUGH the cell phone and not TO the cell phone itself. The stapler won't understand. Trust me.) In the mean time, until you are able to sasiate the stapler, I would recommend that you not be alone with the stapler. Have one of your coworkers stay with you. Just in case.

I hope this helps. I have to go pick up my calculator now.

NO I don't think the cell had anything to do with it. There are possible 2 switches ,the one on the handle that u push to Staples bad. The second would be a safety switch that verifies that u have put something in to staple . Some of the cheaper units will not have the safety switch.

i think of that it basically is going googely once you're around. It probable has a extensive weigh down on you, and it needs you to touch it greater. possibly you need to purpose to staple issues greater and throw the paper clips away.
