My recent docs is currently set to "zero days". So it is useless: every time I reboot, the recent doc tab is emptied! I have no idea how I broke it (months ago) or how to fix it. Thanks for any help!

To prevent the document history from being cleared on every restart, you need to change the ClearRecentDocsOnExit registry value to 0.

1. Start -> Run
2. Type 'Regedit' and hit Enter
3. Registry Editor opens
4. in Regedit go to Edit->Search and search for ClearRecentDocsOnExit
5. set the value of this entry to 0
6. save you changes to the registry

If you don't like fumbling around in the registry you can alternatively use Microsoft's Tweak tool : http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/c/a/fca6767b-9ed9-45a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe
