Is there any way around going direct to a Toyota Dealer and paying big bucks for a master key? Bought a used '05 Toyota Corolla & the key will not open the trunk because it's a Valet key and I'm told that I need a master key to even make any duplicates, I don't have the master key. Tried going to a website that sells masters but, there's no one here to cut it. Any idea how to find out if the key has a chip???

No there is no way around going to the dealer. Most new cars, have a microchip in them. Your regular key maker cannot duplicate it. I know toyotas do because I know someone that works there. It is a pain because it costs so darn much. When I bought my used car it only came with 1 key. I went to the car maker and they wanted 30 bucks for the actual key and 70 to program the microchip!

Have the vehicle towed to the nearest Toyota dealer. Make sure you have the title and registration to prove you are the owner of the vehicle. Show them your proof. They will gather the VIN off the vehicle and cut a key, then they will program it to match your vehicle. When they are finished prepare to open your wallet WIDE because the bill will be in the hundreds of dollars.

It won't "mess up" the engine. How would programming a chip in your Key do anything to the Engine? That doesn't even make sense. The Dealer is the only way to program it to your Car. There's a code that's unique to your car. You need a machine to impregnate that code on the chip in your Key. Take it to the Dealer and let them do it. IF anything were to happen they would be on the hook for it.

Why do you want to do this the hard way? Go to the dealer and get the key you need. If there is no other way, then you are going to have to bite the bullet.

Go back to the place where you purchased the car. I do not see how they just gave you a valet key - that makes no sense. This sounds fishy to me!

Why dont you just go to Toyota dealer and order it. Saving a few dollars ends up costing you more down the road. Don't be cheap and cinchy.....
