I heard this joke from a book?
There was an old lady running a lodge with a German guy, when two thieves come in. They catch them and the lady asks the German if he knows the number for the police.

"I'll look it up in the phonebook"

ha ha the German was saying "no, no, no" (nein=no in German), but the lady misunderstood him for saying 999 instead
