My comment that it is stupidity on the part of the dog owner.
Several years ago, I was traveling Interstate 40, going east outside of Albuquerque, NM. A guy had his dog in the back of his truck... the dog got up on the railing to get higher, lost his footing and fell. He was chained to the bed of the truck. The owner, I guess, didn't see him fall. I was honking my horn like crazy and trying to motion him to pull over, because the dog was flailing and choking on the end of this chain and bouncing off the highway as he went down the road at 70 mph. Blood and tissue were hitting my windshield. I noticed the man sending several hand gestures out the window at me... and hitting his brakes at me periodically, but realized that this man had no clue about what had happened to the dog.
After just a few minutes, the dog finally quit struggling and just hung there on the side of the truck, dragging on the pavement. I was still honking & trying to get him to pull over. Couldn't pass him because of construction at the time. We finally got to a place and pulled over. We both got out, got in each other's faces and and started screaming and cussing at each other.... I screamed at him, "LOOK WHAT YOU DID TO THAT DOG!!!" He finally looked and saw the dog. The dog wasn't much more than hamburger meat on a chain. The man totally broke down, fell to his knees in horrible / terrible grief, crying uncontrollably. I stayed with the man over two hours until he could get some help on the way. He thanked me a hundred times over, although my efforts were too late and he vowed to never carry a dog in the back of a truck again.
This was so unnecessary and and so horribly inhumane!
Who lost in this deal? Both the owner and the dog!!!
So my thoughts on carrying a dog or child in the back of an open pick up???? STUPIDITY. Yes, it should be outlawed and illegal!!! in any state.
Contact your local state Representative and Congressman and let him know that you'd like the law changed to make this a felony, not just a misdemeanor, to carry an animal or human in the back of an open pick up or flat bed truck.

I guess they think the dog is enjoying themselves. Riding in an open truck bed is dangerous. In my area a dog was tied by a leash in the back of a truck. Somehow the leash came undone. The dog jumped out & was hit & killed by the car behind the truck. Another dog jumped out & severely fractured it's leg. It had to be surgically repaired. The last dog was in an accident & was killed. I don't think it is illegal to have a dog in a truck bed, but it is way to dangerous to take the risk.

Most pet owners have a liner of some kind for their dogs to stand or sit on. Hay, a blanket, etc. to keep them from getting burnt on the truck bed and most trucks obviously get air flow when it is hot outside. I don't think there is anything wrong, but I think that people need to be aware of how long the drive is, preparing to water the dog regularly, and let him out to walk around or rest in the shade for a few minutes.

if they stop the truck it could get hot enough for it to be dangerous. more dangerous is if the dog is not secured it could lose it's footing and fall out of the truck likely dying in the process and possibly causing an accident as well.
Additionally, in any accident, a dog in the back of a pickup is unlikely to survive.
But, unless you want laws telling you everything you can and cant do with your dog it's really up to the intelligence and caring of the owner.

I also think it should be illegal. I've heard of dogs jumping out and dying, getting badly hurt.. Even if their tied down it is dangorous. When I was younger I had a dog that we took on a hike with us, but we were riding in a truck and he was tied in the bed of it.. He went to jump out and hung himself, my dad got to him in time but it could have costed him his life. I really just think it is too dangorous. If you have a truck and the dog has to ride in the back I say put the dog in a crate that is tied to the truck tightly so it cannot move. And the crate would have to be big enough for the dog to turn around in. But I personally wouldn't put any of my dogs in the back of a truck for any reason.

Depends where you are and what you are doing..... I live in a small town surrounded by farms and both local dogs and farmers would think it a crime not to allow dogs in the back of pick-ups.
Mind you there is always some dumb-*** that cant use common sense and makes it necessary to pass laws.

No i don't think it hurts them. My dog loves to go for rides in the truck. He gets all excited when i tell him to load up were going for a drive. He barrels into the back and is ready to go. When the rides over i can't even get him out of the truck. So i think they like to ride in the back of the truck.

My dogs ride loose in the back of the pickup - all the time and everywhere. The only exceptions are very cold days or if we are going to be parked for more than a few minutes on very hot days.
We have never had one hurt and not a one has been stupid enough to jump out. But that might be because we take the time to train our dogs. They come when called, sit, stay, down, stand, guard, and heal all off leash. They also know such things as "to the front", "hold", "by", "away", "to me", "stop", "move her" and "take her to the barn."
But their very favorite command is "get in." That means they get to go for a ride. My dogs work hard and are a vital part of my life. They're my working partners. A dog enjoys nothing more than the wind in its face going down the road. Unless it's the "chase the car" game. The heeler watches for oncoming cars through the back window then runs to the side and snaps at them as they go by. A semi gets a bark. The border collie lies in wait along the bed rail and jumps up with a bark. She loves to make people jump. The Aussie, she's just a licker. She wants to wash everybody's ears.
The cruelest thing I could do to my dogs would be to take that pleasure away from them. And considering what they risk every time they take on a nasty cow or start off across the pasture behind my horse, well, riding in the pickup is about the safest activity in their lives. They control the variables.
In the heat? As long as you're moving and they have water, they're cooler than they would be anywhere else - wind factor. If we're going to be stopped, we put them in the shade under the pickup with a bowl of water. I don't take them if I'm going to be on pavement - it's too hot.
Humans want to illegalize every thing an animal enjoys because they're too lazy to put in the time and training to make it safe, or they have an opinion on something the know nothing about.
Go ahead and lock your dog in a kennel, put it on a chain, or lock it in a crate. Give it the most miserable but long life you can. I'm going to give my working partners all the enjoyment they can get and train them to keep it as safe as possible. Train them. Imagine that.

I think its unsafe and cruel. Kind of reminds of the dumb rednecks in SC with their hunting dogs. GRR. My husband and I have three dogs and we stick them in the back of a two door vehicle. I would never put them in the back of a truck! Its illegal for people in most states why not animals?

You would think it's illegal everywhere. I've seen dogs that jumped or were thrown from the bed with degloved tails, road rash, broken bones, and even death. Not cool as they say. People are so ignorant that they think it's fun for their dog. What about the dog you see shivering with fright or from rain and sleet? Do they really think that looks like "fun"?
