You're right. It is insane! What is the world coming to that we can't guide and discipline our own children? There is a difference between discipline and abuse. We all know that. Now, look around at how kids these days behave and it's hard to believe that it's not because of a lack of discipline in the home.

yes, it should. I completely agree and would comply, simply for this reason and this reason alone: "By law you would have a hard time differentiating between a responsible parent who thinks about parenting and then hits and one that does not," Lieber said. "Responsible parents have to give up the privilege to physically discipline their children for the sake of protecting children that aren't being hit once in a blue moon or in a light way, but are really being hit day after day, many times a day." I hope it's passed in california (though they've surprised me lately with passing prop 8) because if it can't pass there, it can't pass anywhere. I'm in NY, I'd absolutely vote for that law. technically, will the government be able to ban spanking? no, it will still be done behind closed doors, like illegal drugs and drinking under 21 and the like. BUT the article is so true -- "But for Lieber, who hears criticism daily from prosecutors, judges and pediatricians that children are being beaten and their parents are getting off on a technicality, the law doesn't even come close to being enough." some parents are abusers and are allowed to continue to do that because it's not illegal to spank. if it were, the abusers would be able to be punished and not let off -- some people think it's okay to spank on the bottom if a kid is in danger, some people think it's okay to spank to discipline OFTEN, some people think it's okay to hit with objects, some people think it's okay to hit with objects often. all of this is 'okay' because it's legal to spank your kids, right? where is the line drawn? I hate spanking and I will never do it. I was never spanked and I am NOT and was not a spoiled little brat running around nor was I disrespectful to my parents. being spanked does not make a kid respectful.

I think it is ridiculous. Society complains how parents are no longer "Parenting" their children and then they try to take parental control out of our hands. If I want to spank my child then that is my decision, just like if I don't want my son to watch a certain movie or cartoon, I am his mommy and that is my choice not the governments! I don't remember any politicians carrying my beautiful baby boy or laboring to bring him into this world so I don't really see how they have a say in the matter.
There is a big difference between spanking a child and abusing a child.

I think a lot of people don't have common sense and are throwing their 2 year olds on their laps and spanking them, society in general is stupid, and that is the fact. People don't have the patience they used to their lives are more stressful and are crossing lines the shouldn't. I don't agree with the band because I see our freedom slipping bit by bit.

I will spank my kids when I have them. I see nothing wrong with a swat on the hind end for a 5 year old.

You are very right the reason there is a ban is because a lot of people abuse their kids by severly beating them for the littlest things.. a good spanking now and then when they do serious wrong shows your authority as well as the consequences of commiting a bad action.

so the spanking act is to protect the few unfortunate kids who are being beat by their parents because the parent has bad parenting skills.. i mean like beating to the point of injury and bleeding. but spanking now and then is ok in my point. my dad spanked me when i did wrong and im in medschool now.

I think that a ban on spanking a child is insane!! More of these kids need to be spanked and they might behave a little better

I also think it is a ridiculous concept. Spanking within reason should be allowed. Beating is what they need to focus on more.
There is a diffence ( let me just hand my child over to the government since they have decided they should tell me how to raise my children.)

spanking ban is stupid. Spanking when done the right way is not abuse. If there should be a law for spanking, then there should be laws for verbal abuse. All these parents who curse out there child they should be punished too.

I agree with you. A line needs to be drawn between discipline and abuse and spanking should be done sparingly to say the least, but to rule it out all together... its effective and does not mean that the parent is bad or lazy, it means they mean business. And honestly, its harder on the parent most often then the child.

Just like religion, the government needs to keep to their own business-they have already screwed up enough things in this country. They already have a full plate of stuff to botch up (economy, education, jobs, the war...). We have enough problems with the way kids are these days without the government restricting what parents can do. This may be my last answer because I'm sure the government is monitoring the internet and I will be accused of sedition and arrested...(dripping with sarcasm).
