Continue to take the medications your doctor has prescribed for you.

And if you can not afford Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, for it is Very Costly, maybe read

Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn's book called:
"Coming To Our Senses" He is a leader on helping anyone with GAD, and those who suffer enormouly from stress. He even has a clinic in Mass. But try some self-cognitive
behavioral therapy through reading and practicing the techniques in that book.
I bought the book 3 years ago for my older brother. His son has GAD, like how you described. And the book has helped him tremendously, he still however is on two medications, to keep him stabilized;but the milligram strength has been lowered quite a bit, because of his improvement, after having practiced the techniques in the book,
for 4 months. He continues to practice these teachniques which help him alot.

You have an advantage over my brother's son, because you are an adult. He is only 10.
And is doing pretty good.

Take Care.

I, personally - practice something called

the mindfulness of breathing, to reduce stress,

anxiety, discouragement, and to also

improve my confidence, & my memory.

It is very easy to learn, but must be practiced

daily for 10 to 15 min. a day. It also calms my

mind down, helps me not to be easily angered,

and brings me a mental peace.

P.S. - just ignore those who have such a negative, pessimistic, critical judgments toward you in life. Especially those few from Yahoo Answers, who wish only to bring a person lower than they already may feel.
Please do not allow those people to get to you.
You are worth so much more than that.

You should only take the dose of Xanax prescribed by your psychiatrist. Don't change it without talking to him/her first. Also, if things haven't gotten better in 3 1/2 years, you really should see another kind of therapist as well. I have GAD, and have been prescribed xanax. I am now on it PRN, but had to go through Cognitive-behavioral therapy to get there.

I didn't think you should be on xanax that long. I thought it was very addictive. I personally take 10 mg Lexapro and 2 mg Lorazapam. I hope the Lexapro will kick in enough with the anxiety where I can quit the Lorazapam soon.

Everyone is different as to what meds work for them, I just hope you have a good doctor guiding you.

Good luck.

I know somethinng that will really help your problem and not just mask it by taking pills. Have you tried Lucinda Bassett's program? I promise, I had really bad anxiety disorder all of my life and couldn't take even 0.5 mg of Xanax because I couldn't function due to sleepiness. I bought the program about 18 months ago and did it for the 11 weeks. I haven't had anxiety since and I haven't had any panic attacks either. It really worked and, believe me, I was VERY skeptical. Think about it?

My advice: You don't need any kind of meds. You are taking the right med, but slowly break off the xanax and learn to deal with your probs on your own.
A shrink once told me "all your problems are in your head" i was mad about that, but then i realized he was right- there isn't any chemical imbalance or anything the problems are all in your head.
Learn to deal with your problem and beat it that way rather than the the alprazolam.
If you're asking for how much you can take for recreational use, don't take that much, but drink some vodka with your regular safe amount and you'll be in dreamland for a long time. its called a darryl strawberry cocktail i think

AS RECOMMENDED BY ONE RESPONDENT: DO NOT TAKE ZOLOFT- ESP. NEVER TAKE ZOLOFT FOR ANXIETY RELATED PROBLEMS!!! ZOLOFT IS 100% CRAP COMPARED TO ALPRAZOLAM WHICH ACTUALLY DOES HELP. ZOLOFT IS NOT ONLY USELESS, IT MAKES ANXIETY WORSE, AND RUINS YOUR SEX LIFE

Perhaps you should see your psychiatrist? Maybe they could try a new medicine, such as Zoloft. You might have been taking the Xanax so long your body is immune to it's effects.
