Bisexual Christian here. *declares self*
There are verses in the Bible that speak out against homosexuality. The thing is, many Christians believe the verse that says homosexuality is an "abomination," yet ignore verses that say you're not supposed to wear clothes made of two kinds of thread (polyester), you're not supposed to work on Saturday (or Sunday, depending on your religion); you're not supposed to socialize with a woman on her period; you're not supposed to eat pork; I could continue.
Many Christians pick and choose the Biblical laws that are comfortable for them. Paul says that it's a sin "to do that which is not convenient to nature," and my church upholds the common interpretation of that verse (that he's referring to homosexuality). I have been told this, however, by my FEMALE youth leader. Paul also spoke against allowing women to teach in the church.
If one of these laws is outdated, they're ALL outdated. If one is not, ALL are not. Most Christians don't believe that. That's why I only follow the words in red - Christ's own words.

In this day in age, when science has all but strongly concluded that there is a strong genetic element through the study of identical twins, ignorance plays a good mix. I'd say most just become homophobic because of their religion, not like it isn't the only immoral structure.

Oh yes you are a bad liberal.....
If you are a true Christian, you are not "homophobic" you should never say offensive slurs in public about them, you just shouldn't have anything to do with them. So to answer your question, Christians probably become homophobic because they have been taught the scriptures wrong, as a christian, but not because they are a christian.

My church accepts gays, and I was raised with tolerance and respect as one of the many values that both my family and my church instilled in me. So I fail to see a connection between religious beliefs and homophobia, in my own personal case.
However, a few Christian groups, such as many (but not all) fundamentalists, are hostile to gays. In their case, I'd imagine that their beliefs, which support homophobia and discrimination, would be the culprit.
If one is simply homophobic, but not particularly religious, then there'd be no connection between belief and bigotry. I've met a couple of homophobic agnostics, for instance, so there's no correlation in that example between Christian belief and their intolerance of others.

I think that we disagree with homosexuality because we are Christians. It may come off as being homophobic, because we don't want to bear witness to the lifestyle. It doesn't mean we are homophobic. Instead of separating ourselves from homosexuals, I believe we should witness to them, and share what God's word says about it. By doing this, you can share God's love with them, and not come off as homophobic. I think a lot of Christians lose sight of the fact that we are here to set the standard, and to witness to others. So by coming off as homophobic, nothing is accomplished besides giving homosexuals an excuse to talk trash about us.

I can only speak for myself, I am not homophobic and I am a christian. Live and let live. As a christian, it is not my position to pass judgement on anyone. Homosexual or anything else. It is my belief this is Gods position. God bless****

Do you suffer from homophobia because you are an atheist? I hardly see that one would become a Christian because they are homophobic, that is ridiculous. Oh Yeah, the guy down the street is gay, so I'm going to become a Christian. And you guys call us stupid?

Neither. I'm not homophobic, and any "Christian" that is is not a true Christian.

There's no such thing as 'homophobic'. That's just a hate term made up to make people feel bad about speaking the truth.
