You got me into this question on false pretenses! If I had known it was going to provide you with space for a rant instead of a question I would never have gone in.

However, I'm here, so I'll get my tuppence (or two points?) worth. Religion that shuns politics is as empty and useless as a water-barrel full of holes. Politics that shuns religion brings down a ton of fiery coals on its head. Interestingly, it's only when religion and politics clash that there's a chance of some real good resulting. It's also the time when politicians start shouting at religionists to back off and stick to their 'own' corner! And it's the time when those religionists who stick their heads in the sand thinking God will take care of the 'secular' world will point their self-righteous little fingers at believers who care about the welfare of others, trying to do something about it.

I'm not a Catholic, but I understand what Dom Helder Camara meant when he said, "When I give food to the poor they call me a saint. When I ask why they have no food they call me a Communist."

Religion and its laws should be up to the individual to keep or not as they see fit, with each person choosing to accept the consequences if they turn out to be wrong. Since religion is a matter of belief, and there are many of them, each believing themselves to be the only TRUE one, I feel it is folly for a country to choose one and impose it on its people. Sadly, that has happened in many countries!
Politics, for better or worse, is the way countries are run. This I suppose is needed to some degree as people aren't evolved enough to govern themselves in a way that wouldn't lead to chaos. But it hasn't got anything to do with faith or with the afterlife or the truth behind the universe - it's more localised.

Religion - the people you choose to associate with in your quest for understanding of God.
Politics - the people you vote for that you think are capable of making good decisions for the majority of people in either city, state/province, country.
