A pat on the butt didn't used to mean anything sexual. Why does it now?

Because people are less personal now than they used to be. Now that most people assume a greater distance than the generations before them, the result is the appearances of certain gestures, such as pats on the butt, as well as sometimes hand-holding and even hugging to be of sexual nature. It's sucky and really doesn't make logical sense, but it's just a sign of people in general becoming less personal, less affectionate (outside of romantic relationships), less tolerant, and more sensitive altogether.

You also have to consider the role of television here. Since sex is portrayed so abundantly, the cliche gestures that are used to associate with sex on television (butt-touching being one of the many) are transposed into our society, because most people would rather let the media do their thinking for them than analyze the facts for themselves. Thus any gesture seen through the media as a sexual gesture becomes an assumed sexual gesture in all situations, even when it may not be intended by the person who does it.

How would you like it if I yanked you around on your zipper. Be careful because you might be missing a few teeth, receive a black eye or be hauled away by the police because of an "unlawful sexual advance" charge. Toughing a person this way is inappropriate.

If it is your mate/spouse and you are at home, go ahead and touch, grab or whatever...

If I touch someone on their bottom, I would consider this to be a from of sexual attention. And any un wanted or un desired sexual attention is just not appropriate. And touching someone in a sexual manner without implied or expressed consent is wrong. There is no gray area on this subject. God bless****
