I'm making a wine rack (out of wood) should the bottles be tilted front, back or level?

Because of the way the bottles are shaped, if you make "cradles" for the bottles even, the bottles will naturally tilt forward. However, when a bottle is laying down, the fluid will naturally fill the neck of the bottle and keep the cork wet - which is why you (a) lay the bottle down and (b) worry about these sorts of things.

But to answer your question, if you really needed to tilt the rack, it would tilt forward.

It depends on how the bottles you get are corked. If they have a cork stopper, then they need to be tilted slightly down. You need to do this because the bottles that have a cork stopper have a tendancy to dry out, and keeping them bottles tilted down keeps the cork wet and expanded. However, if you purchase wines that have the new rubberized cork, you don't need to worry. they keep a tigh seal without needing to eb kept moist.

I have built many wine racks/cellars and the best way to make them both from a design and an aesthetic view is to lay them flat(level). I think the forward tilt is unnecessary.
