I obviously don't know how to state this correctly, or I could find something on the web about it. Here's the deal: My XP desktop loses the insertion point where you enter the password, I can click in it all day and the insertion point will not appear. Numlock is on. I just got a Dell laptop, Windows XP Media, and two days later, boom, it is doing the same thing! It couldn't be a virus because I have two other XP desktops that aren't doing this. I have to restart everytime in order to enter my password. This happens after standby, hibernate, and screen saver because I have password protected them on resume. What is going on?

The reason why I say it couldn't be a virus is because the one desktop I just completely reformatted and has a fresh install, and the new laptop started doing it before I added it to my network. My virus scan shows nothing on any of my computers, and two of them on my home network aren't presenting with this problem. Ctrl Alt Del does work to get the prompt, but it is still a headache.

.
The desktop password protect option is dependent on having an active screensaver.

1. Check to make sure the time option is five minutes or more.
2. Select a new active screensaver.
3. Your anti-virus software may be opening your desktop during an automatic update; but this is
probably not the problem, because you are saying this happens too often.
So it would be prudent to run an excellent virus scan now
such as Avast.

I usually Press enter to Get the Password Prompt with it set the way you describe... one of my home Test units is set that way,Alternative is to activate the CTRL+ALT+DEL to login to XP... it is usually more stable with that.

Wow, never heard of that one before. Try disabling the password and then re-enabling it
