If he is younger and still very active for the most part and it is just in the morning or when he lays down it could be that he has a injured muscle. You should try to let him lay down (this works better if you lay down with him) and ice his paw with an ACE bandage holding it in place and then once it melts put muscle relaxant cream for humans on it and cover it with a rag before ACE bandaging it so that he can't lick it.

If he is older it is probably arthritis and there isn't much you can do even if you take him to a vet. Shorten his play time by fifteen minutes for each session and shorten walks a little as well. If he lives outdoors it is time for him to live indoors because the cold will aggravate his condition and make him feel pain at times. You should treat it like a pulled muscle for a few days and then if he still can't seem to get up, you should take hime to the vet(if you can afford one) or assume it is a recurring condition from age.

The first thing I would suggest is to give the dog a really thorough inspection. Start form the very top of the leg and work down, see if you can feel anything out of the ordinary (lumps, bumps, sores, etc). Also look very hard a the pads of the dogs foot as a very tiny cut (or object like a pebble) could cause a lot of pain. If you have examined the dog and still can not find the source of the problem, I would place a call to your vet and see what they suggest. Depending on the dogs breed and family history he may be predisposed to certain ailments and if the vet has already diagnosed something like Arthritis the vet can probably suggest some home remedies. If the dog continues to favor this paw, you will need to pay the vet a visit and get a diagnosis.
Good luck

Well it sounds like he is favoring the paw, so if its not broken and unless you are a Dr. or a vet i don't know how you can be 100% sure. But there has to something wrong with it, you need to get him to a vet and if you can't afford a vet you need to take his paw into your hand and gently touch the bottom and see if he yelps when touched and look for any soars, any abrasions, He could have been poked by a needle or a thumbtack and it could get infected, what would you do if it were your child? How old is he? He might have arthritis. It's also possible that he's had a stroke, depending on his age and breed.

If he's not old, is it possible he suffered a head injury? He could also have an ear infection that is making him dizzy, giving him trouble when he first gets up but not so much when walking around. How long has he been like this?

Home remedies that couldn't hurt:

Put a little hand-warmed olive oil inside his ears if he'll let you (outside, as he'll probably shake a bit of it out) once every 2 days.

Feed him fish oil tablets to help with possible arthritis. Drugs for dog arthritis are relativley cheap, but fish oil will help too.

If he is favoring his paw, there is something wrong with it even if it is not broken. Try looking inside his paw first to see if you can see anything - perhaps he stepped on something or something is lodged between his toes. If you aren't able to see anything take him to your vet as soon as possible. You don't want whatever is bothering him to get worse.

How do you know it's not broken. If he doesn't put it to the ground there is something wrong, get him to the vet before it gets infected.

He could have hurt it some how and is favoring it, or it could be the start of arthritis. If it persists, then you need to take him to the vets.

His leg may be injured. Or it could be a joint problem or arthritis. I would get him checked out at the vet.

Depends really, Have you been watching him? Has he jumped off something pretty high? Watch him for a few days. If he still favors his foot, take him to see a vet and they will assess it further.

it could be arthritis, or he could have gotten a cut on it or bruised it somehow. if he isn't fine in a few days, take him to the vet.
