I'M a Certified Hypnotist, and my friend, the number one thing I see after people wanting to lose weight and stop smoking, is those who have a fear of dentist or needles! And, this is one of the easiest to resolve. Remember FEAR is all in your HEAD. Fear is not REAL, it is an imagined perception....the "what if" syndrome....if you need direction, let me know...

In the meantime KNOW that the dentist will NOT harm you...associate him/her with good....

Nothing can really alleviate fear of dentists until you actually go and get that pain taken care of. I went without dental visits for most of my young life, and I'm paying for it now.
Don't let your dental health go down the drain, get your tooth fixed right away. I understand your fear of the needle and drill..I had a tooth pulled in December, and it wasn't too much fun but I think it had more to do with the dentist involved. The last time I had gotten a tooth pulled prior to Dec. was in 2002 and the entire procedure was done within 10 mins, and I didn't feel anything, so it just depends on the dentist!
Research dentists in your area that are known for their bedside manner and understanding of your fear of needles and dental work. Don't keep dealing with the pain...it won't go away and sooner or later it will eventually become so painful you will want someone to run over your head with a monster truck...get it taken care of NOW! Good luck!

I can relate! I avoided the dentist untill I finally broke a tooth, and had to pay thousands of dollars in dentist costs. What I did first was find a close dentist. The, on my first visit, I was totally honest with him. I told him, up front, that I hated and feared his profession. That I felt the dentist was a hold over from Nazi Germany, and I wanted nothing to do with it. He was very patient with me. He explained his methods and options. He used a camera to point out what needed to be done. I told him that I was used to getting gas to relax enough for a shot. He said to me to let him give me a shot and if it hurt, he would give me gas. Believe me, he was the best and most painless dentist out there. Methods have changed a lot in my lifetime. But if all else fails, see a dentist that uses what they call sedation dentistry. They give you a pill, which puts you to sleep. When you wake up, its all over! The main thing is go see him now, before the dentist bill is astronmical

take it from a person who just got done having many teeth pulled and having dentures on my upper plate put in. this experience is not pleasant for any human being, not even a mach man like hulk hogan, so just try to have a good attitude and find a dentist who you can relate to and has a sense of humor. that helped me a lot, because it took 8 trips, once a week, which included fillings, a cleaning, extractions, and then installation of dentures. i got through it, with only novacaine being used, and now feel like and look like a new person. it taught me to take better care of what teeth i have left. one cannot take ones dental health for granted. i was homeless for years and never brushed, and that is why i lost me upper teeth and was in extreme pain. would you rather have a little pain from the dentist, or risk gum disease if not treated? i am lucky to get this work down in time. so just grit your teeth, keep a positive attitude and you will look and feel better. dandidonna@yahoo.com answered and can tell you, it saved me over 3,000 dollars in future work by going now.

Take some music with you (cd player or mp3, walkman, or whatever it helps to drown out the sound of the drill!) I hate the dentist too! And try to find your happy place (close your eyes and imagine you're somewhere else doing something relaxing) I like to imagine laying on a deserted tropical island.... but whatever floats your boat!

find a dentist that deals w/patients that have that fear. They can give you a little gas that puts you out of it while they get the business done. Other than that you can always weigh the alternatives, brushing your teeth while you whistle or having a really great smile. A small price to pay really.

Take a couple of Advil prior to going into the Dentist's office. That will help alleviate any pain that you experience while you're there. Take a couple of shots of Vodka as well. That will alleviate your anxiety of going to the Dentist.

I took my 3 yr. old daughter to get a filling, and they gave her headphones to wear during the procedure. Bring some tunes along and blast them to drown out the drill noise. That would probably help some.
