Could there be something in the paw...anything from a piece of glass to a hair can hurt enough that the dog would be reluctant to step on it. And before you laugh about the hair hurting, this can be one of the most painful pricks to have happen! I have personally had four hairs make their way between the cells of my skin, and press into my flesh. It feels worse than a nail (which I have also had embedded in my feet).

Examine your dog's feet with a magnifying glass if necessary. You will also need a strong, directed light to highlight whatever it is that may be causing the pain.

If you can't find anything yourself, I would suggest a trip to the Vet. It is not humane to watch an animal (who is a family member after all) suffer without care.

My dog did the same thing two months ago. He yipped when he tried to get up. I took him to the vet, and they did x-rays on him, and found nothing. They think he just pulled a muscle. They gave him a shot for pain, and an anti-inflammatory medicine. That trip cost me close to $200, so last week he did the same thing, wouldn't put his right paw down, and yiped at any movement. I called the vet this time, and he said to to keep him warm and give him 2 aspirins (at first he said 1aspirin, but then I told him he weighs 95 lbs and he upped it to 2). He said it couldn't be Tylenol or ibuprofen, but aspirin. I did what he said, and it's been 3 days and he's walking around again. However, either time he hasn't hurt his leg or paw, it's in the muscles above the leg.

How do you know it is not broken? Have you personally taken an x-ray of his paw? There could also be lots of other things wrong as well, like arthiritis, he could have a splinter in it, etc. Take him to a vet and just find out.

how old is your dog? could be many things - arthiritis, cracked pad under the paw, infection, splinter, strain or sprained muscle. if the dog is older and struggling to rise after sleeping, probably sounds like arthiritis. does he whimper when he gets up? look and see if the paw pad is cracked. feel if muscle is swollen - look for lumps and feel for heat on the leg, between the toes and around the pads. best case - take himt o the vet - have him checked and x-rayed.

he probably has Arthiritis in his hips and shoulders this is pretty common. you might need to take him to the vet to get some pain management.
