I have an F1 visa and I tried to get a minimum wage job off campus. The owner said I was good for the job (it was at a gas station), but that she can't hire me because I have an F1 visa. See I pay federal, state, medicare, etc taxes from my normal on campus paycheck. I don't understand how it is bad for teh country if international students work off campus.

Because it's a completely separate visa. I have gone to school with people who have had this problem. The only thing they were able to do was clean house and babysit. I think they should make it easier for students to work while here, since not many college students are independently wealthy. As long as people have good character and are taking classes. We have a problem with people abusing the visa system and not taking classes at all. I think as long as you produce proof of attendance at your college to immigration and work no more than 20 hours a week, you should be able to get a visa for work when you apply for a school visa. But that's just how I would do things....

My husband was an international student and he did work off campus but they would only let him work so many hours so he got like 3 part time jobs now he's married and we're doing an adjustment of status and has a workers permit so he doesnt have to worry about that stuff anymore.(sometimes i think thats the only reason why he married me). Lately they are cracking down on that kinda of stuff though and it is true that americans are losing jobs because of the immigration to thje US. I know alot of people (americans) that have been replaced with illegals which is not fair but being that you are here legally they should allow you to work. But on the other hand they gave you a visa because someone in your family produced an avadfavit of support meaning they had enough money to take care of you. Anyhow good luck out there and God bless.

because aliens are not supposed to take away the jobs that would normally be held by American citizens. Or, is it because legal aliens are not supposed to take away the jobs held by illegal, illiterate immigrants? Did you have to show a proof of financial support from whomever before you came here?

Ironic, Isn't it? Now you see all of these mexican/latino illegal immigrants working at those jobs( that were held by people who at least know how t communicate), speaking barely a word of English. what a waste for all the study we did and tests we took just to come to this country legally.

A student visa isn't a artwork visa. you won't be able to legally artwork different than in direct courting to your container of be taught, for useful education, and basically after your first 365 days. the college does not make the regulations, the government does.

Because our own people need jobs and when we let someone in to work we have limits on how many. The student visas are above that number.
