My 2yr old indoor tabby died suddenly in front of me. He was very well taken care of, visited the vet often, and died for no apparent reason. Has this happened to anyone else??? What could have caused it? The vet said it could have been something in the brain or heart, but I can't afford an autopsy. I just want to know what it could have been??? : (

Cardiomyopathy is the leading cause of sudden death in cats. It's called a silent killer. So you would have never known until it happened.

Colby is my 13 year old Maine Coon. I was very concerned about his heart when he was kitten because he panted when he played hard. I didn't think this was normal, and the vet just said it was because he played too fast and hard and just wore himself out.

As a pet owner I wanted to know more about heart conditions in cats so I did my own research...............

I had the same thing happen with my border collie. I had taken it to the vet all the time once a week to be exact. She was very healthy, had all of her shots, exercised daily, etc. And one day when I arrived home she was fine and when I sat on the couch and called her to me she then fell over and died. I was heart broken but I could afford an autopsy and when I had it done the vet told me that she died of two very possible things. 1. Heart Failure for unknown reasons. 2. A Brain disease that the parents passed down to her. (A genetic thing). So I dont think that it would be any different from a cat. Sorry about your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. The same thing happened to my cat and the vet said it was either a heart attack or stroke. You gave your cat good care and there was really nothing more you could have done. At least he didn't suffer and that is something to be thankful for. The hurt is deep when you lose a pet you have bonded with so closely but healing will come in time.

Thats hard to know unless you did the autopsy, but then again if its undetected you might never know. I've been a Vet Technician for 4 years and i never saw something like that. Thats just weird. To think of it, it could have been a tumor or like the vet said the heart, the brain, who knows. My Condolences to you!!

You may never know, hard as that may be. One day I took my cat to the vet. That day everyone in the office seemed a little down, but I didn't know why. Usually the friendly office cat, "Sam" was around and I like to pet him. But that morning he was no where to be seen. When I asked about him they said that he had died that morning unexpectedly (mind you this is the vet's office) and that they had tried to recessitate him but died anyway. No one knew why.

I found my cat dead this morning. He was only four. I can't stop crying. He was fine last night. I had picked him up and was hugging and kissing him. He didn't come down for his breakfast this morning like usual but figured he was just being lazy. He was a healthy indoor cat.

oh, i'm so sorry,,,, there's nothing worse than losing a pet... (maybe a child, or parent of course, but then again, they are our children, huh?.... ) I've never had that happen, but my mom's dog is having brain problems, she's going to have her put down this weekend... :(( Is there any way he could have choked on something? maybe got a hold of some sort of medication or chemical? I'm so sorry,,,, my prayers are with you....

(edit: you dont' have any poisonous plants around that he was chewing on, do you? Devil's ivy and Poinsettias are very poisonous to animals, it causes their throats and tounges to swell, and they can't breathe... I'm so sorry.... :(( )

Bless your heart, I don't know what it might have been. My 10 year old cat had several strokes and died, but it wasn't quite that sudden.

I am sorry for your loss-I hope you can find some answers.
