You can find a handgun several places on-line, but your purchase must be handled by a dealer with a FFL. If you don't have a friend or family member who is familiar with this procedure, try to find a local, reputable dealer who is willing to discuss this with you. Since you are evidently a novice, your dealer could provide advice as to what type pistol you might want to purchase, as well as operating and safety training. After your initial pistol purchase, you can buy ammunition and accessories(holsters, etc.) on-line, but the pistol must be bought through a dealer.
To start off, you might go to www.gunbroker.com and look for whatever pistol you might consider buying.

Federal law prohibits this. This law is well known and most people obey it. It will be hard for you to find someone to break it with you so don't bother.
Depending on the state you are in, buying a handgun can be done without a waiting period and without a background check by doing a personal transfer rather than going to a dealer. This is the so-called 'gun show loophole'. The way to do this is by finding someone who is going to sell a gun and negotiate the price just like any other good. Some places to look are classified ads and gun shows. www.craigslist.com also sometimes has ads, although it is against their policy. If you have a local gun club, sometimes guns for sale are posted on their bulletin board.
Once you own a gun, you can buy ammo and accessories online. I suggest www.cheaperthandirt.com.

You need to find a local gun dealer who will do a "FFL transfer". You can obtain a copy of dealers license and send it to the dealer you are purchasing from. The dealer you are purchasing from will send the gun (after payment is made) to the dealer you obtained a copy of the license from. Then you pic up the gun from the dealer you got the license from. He will charge you a transfer fee and will have to fill out a 4473 (background check). Keep in mind this is all contingent on where you live. If you live in CA, NY, NJ, or some similar state with narrow minded gun laws you are just SOL (sh#t outta luck)

Find a licensed gun dealer in your area who is willing to handle the transfer for you. With few exceptions, a federally licensed gun dealer is required to purchase a handgun. He or she will also be able to tell you what handguns are legal in your area.

Go to a gun shop and ask them about the rules in your state. In NC you must have a permit from the local sheriff.

Can't buy guns online -Gun Control Act of 1968-. If you have a Federal Firearms License then you could-but that would mean you were a dealer. Any guns that are transferred from one owner to another have to go through licensed dealers.
