First, you should have had a thorough medical exam to make sure you do not have any physiological cause for the panic attacks. The actual cause of panic attacks is unknown, everything from adrenaline overload to mitral valve prolapse in the heart have been examined as potential causes.
A psychiatrist is then the best person to administer medication for control of the panic and/or anxiety attacks if they are debilitating. Most respondents have named one of two classes of drugs. Many psychiatrists will use one or the other but in many cases both classes of drugs are required. There are the anti-seizure medications such as Xanax, Klonipin, Ativan to help with physiological overload. The other class of medication is the anti-depressant. These are of the form of Paxil, Zoloft, Imipramine, even Prozac.
As a caution, it is a well-founded fact that Xanax turns out to be a highly-addictive medication and as such there are many better alternatives.
Good luck.

There are many different medications that treat anxiety. Many factors influence which medication may work well for you and your doctor will take these into consideration, including:
When or what you are doing when you have your panic - for example - is it driving or at home? Some medications may have a more sedating effect than others and you will want to be careful about which one you use based on where you may be having the attack. Ie... you may want a medication that isn't so sedating for a panic attack while driving, but if you're at home, something stronger might not matter. Some may act faster than others - again faster for the driving panic attack, slower for the one that happens at home. A little common sense and planning here.
What other medications are you on? People must be careful as some medications may interfere with others.
How often are you having panic attacks? More frequent attacks may mean your physician might want to prescribe an anxiety medication that lasts longer than if you have a panic attack every once in a while.
The best thing to do is to talk with your physician or psychiatrist. They will know what medication may be best suited to treat you in your situation.

I have suffered from panic disorder for 15 years. During this time I have attempted to take different medications all with the many side effects that made me ill. My panic disorder eventually led to agoraphobia. With help from a counselor, I was introduced to a great book called the Anxiety and Phobia Workbook.(found at any bookstore). This book clearly explains the physiology behind a panic attack and helps you cope with them without the help of medications. It teaches coping techniques which are very helpful. I am now panic free and drug free in college studying Psychology so I can honestly say try that first. If your panic is severe Xanax may be perscirbed as a releif of aggitation, but be careful it is very addicting.

Just CALM first. Life consists not in holding good cards but in playing those you hold well. Life is full of beauty. NOTICE it. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes Be cool, RELAX. Take a deep breathe until you control yourself. Start sharing with praying. Eat HEALTHY food. Do sport. Find some hobbies. Keep searching the solution progressively. Enjoy live in BALANCE. Ora et Labora. Shalom, God Loves U always =)

That is going to be different for each person that suffers from the disorder. We are all unique. While I function well with Xanax, a friend of mine needs Klonopin and still another uses Buspar. There are many antianxiety agents, you just need to enlist the help of your doctor to find the right one for you.
